News - The Belgian city of Antwerp was officially announced as the host city for the 2013 World Outgames by the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association (GLISA) last friday.
The city was originally chosen as a host city last year but the global financial crisis delayed any official progress. The news comes in the same week that the Danish capital Copenhagen announced that the 2009 installment of the event had a positive financial result on the city.
The city of Antwerp also hosted the 2007 EuroGames, and strongly campaigned for the Outgames in 2013. Jan De Wieuw, member of the organising team of the 2013 event, said: "The 3rd World Outgames will yet again show Antwerp's capabilities in hosting attractive events, not only for our own LGBT community, but for all in Antwerp. This event in 2013 will of course be based on the three equally important components that distinguish all GLISA events: Sports, Culture and Human Rights."
GLISA director for Europe Tatjana Eggeling said: "We are very happy to see that the City of Antwerp, the Province of Antwerp and the Flemish Government have taken partnership in the project and will provide both financial and in kind support now and in the years to come."
